ENVIRONMENT IMPACT OF AIRPORT OPERATIONS

      NOISE POLLUTION

Designing an Open Source Geospatial Solution to Manage Airport Noise and Operations – Part 1

For this week, we will be diving into environmental impacts that affect the airport operations. I will be discussing the Noise issues. No-one likes noise and to be specific a jet or a plane noise, its loud and interruptive. This is one big issue that affects the day to day operation of most airports. "Since the emergence of the aviation industry, aircraft noise has been one of the most important sources of excessive noise generated by human activities." ( McGill 2016) Noise can cause serious damages to peoples hearing ability, with that being said, the government has to be very cautious of where they decide to build airports.

Aircraft noises can be caused by either the type of engine or the aircrafts frame. When the air passes through the aircrafts frame, it causes some friction and turbulence which ends up producing the loud noise. "The noises generated varies  according to aircraft size and type, and can differ even for identical aircrafts depending on factors such as weather conditions. Aircraft engines do not produce as much lift in hot weather when the air is less dense, this may result into the aircraft flying into a low altitude during takeoff. Other factors may include weight of the aircraft, including passengers, baggage, cargo and the amount of fuel onboard. I addition the direction in which the aircraft is travelling may affect the noise generated over a particular location." (Edinburg)

With this being said, the airport authorities need to find a way to mitigate the problem and reduce the noise exposure to the surrounding community. Things like putting curfews and avoiding flights at night can help the community a lot since this is when most people sleep. This however, can cause the airport a loss. Other ways include, "...reduce the number of people exposed to excessive noise levels, and finally help local community receive the airport’s plans and activities. Solutions such as urban planning, applying new technologies and designs, and restricting operation of particular aircraft types." (McGill 2016)  This ways can help the community a lot. Keeping the people involved in planning is a always a great way to start.
