AIRTRAFFIC CONTROL ENTITIES.
RANDOM ACCESS PLAN POSITION INDICATOR AND TERMINAL DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR
This weeks topic will be about the Air Traffic control entities and to be specific the Random Access Plan Position Indicator (RAPPI) and the Weather Radar and how contribute to an Air Traffic controller's day today activity. RAPPI is "... a software tool that can display aircrafts targets reported by a surveillance source of present as side-by-side display of all surveillance sources that provide data to an en-route air traffic control centre." (FAA 2020) A Terminal doppler weather radar on the other hand is used to get vital informations and warnings about:
- Hazardous wind sheer conditions
- Precipitation
- Gust front
- Microbursts
This two entities are very important to not only the pilots but the air traffic controllers. The "RAPPI workstation provides the national airspace system operations manager immediate information about the health status of the surveillance sources supporting the facility." (FAA 2020) The "TDWR's primary purpose is to timely and accurately detect hazardous wind sheer in and near terminal approach and departure corridors as well as to report information to pilots and local air traffic controllers. TDWR also provides warnings of sustained wind shifts and hazardous weather, including turbulence, to ATC supervisory employees to improve airport operation. We anticipate that NextGen Surveillance and Weather Radar Capability, a NextGen capability, will replace TDWR. Until then, we must properly maintain the TDWR system to comply with service availability requirements."(FAA)
This two entities I believe are mostly important to the ATC because the Aircrafts first can't take off without good weather and the ATC should alway be aware of what the weather is going to be the RAPPI is important in that we are able to locate the jets wherever they are.
